    Sidereal anisotropies in the median rigidity range 60-600GV in 1978-1983

    Observed sidereal variations are corrected for the influence of spurious variation by a method using the antisidereal diurnal variations produced from the same 2nd order anisotropy (Nagashima, et al., 1983). It is demonstrated that the corrected variations are a resultant product of two constituents of galactic origin: one is north-south (N-S) symmetric and the other is N-S asymmetric

    Long BGO (Bismuth Germanate) and BSO (Bismuth Silicate) crystals coupled with silicon photodiodes have been used to detect minimum-ionizing particles(MIP). With a low noise amplifier customized for this purpose, the crystals can detect MIPs with an excellent signal-to-noise ratio. The NCE(Nuclear Counter Effect} is also clearly observed and measured.     Ordered phase and phase transitions in the three-dimensional generalized six-state clock model

    We study the three-dimensional generalized six-state clock model at values of the energy parameters, at which the system is considered to have the same behavior as the stacked triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model and the three-state antiferromagnetic Potts model. First, we investigate ordered phases by using the Monte Carlo twist method (MCTM). We confirmed the existence of an incompletely ordered phase (IOP1) at intermediate temperature, besides the completely ordered phase (COP) at low-temperature. In this intermediate phase, two neighboring states of the six-state model mix, while one of them is selected in the low temperature phase. We examine the fluctuation the mixing rate of the two states in IOP1 and clarify that the mixing rate is very stable around 1:1. The high temperature phase transition is investigated by using non-equilibrium relaxation method (NERM). We estimate the critical exponents beta=0.34(1) and nu=0.66(4). These values are consistent with the 3D-XY universality class. The low temperature phase transition is found to be of first-order by using MCTM and the finite-size-scaling analysis

    Ordered phase and scaling in ZnZ_n models and the three-state antiferromagnetic Potts model in three dimensions

    Based on a Renormalization-Group picture of ZnZ_n symmetric models in three dimensions, we derive a scaling law for the ZnZ_n order parameter in the ordered phase. An existing Monte Carlo calculation on the three-state antiferromagnetic Potts model, which has the effective Z6Z_6 symmetry, is shown to be consistent with the proposed scaling law. It strongly supports the Renormalization-Group picture that there is a single massive ordered phase, although an apparently rotationally symmetric region in the intermediate temperature was observed numerically.Comment: 5 pages in REVTEX, 2 PostScript figure

    Anomalous increase of solar anisotropy above 150GV in 1981-1983

    An analysis was carried out of the observed data with Nagoya (surface). Misato (34mwe) and Sakashita (80mwe) multidirectional muon telescope, for the solar activity maximum period of 1978-1983. These data respond to primaries extending over the median rigidity range 60GV to 600GV. The observed amplitude at Sakashita station in 1981-1983 increased, especially in 1982; the amplitude is twice as large as that in 1978-1980, when those at Nagoya and Misato stations are nearly the same as those in 1978-1980. Uni-directional anisotropy is derived by the best fit method by assuming the flat rigidity spectrum with the upper cutoff rigidity Pu. The value of Pu obtained is 270GV in 1981-1983 and 150GV in 1978-1980

    Solar tri-diurnal variation of cosmic rays in a wide range of rigidity

    Solar tri-diurnal variations of cosmic rays have been analyzed in a wide range of rigidity, using data from neutron monitors, and the surface and underground muon telescopes for the period 1978-1983. The rigidity spectrum of the anisotropy in space is assumed to be of power-exponential type as (P/gamma P sub o) to the gamma exp (gamma-P/P sub o). By means of the best-fit method between the observed and the expected variations, it is obtained that the spectrum has a peak at P (=gamma P sub o) approx = 90 GV, where gamma=approx 3.0 and P sub o approx. 30 GV. The phase in space of the tri-diurnal variation is also obtained as 7.0 hr (15 hr and 23 hr LT), which is quite different from that of approx. 1 hr. arising from the axisymmetric distribution of cosmic rays with respect to the IMF

    On the nature of the X-ray absorption in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4507

    We present results of the ASCA observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4507. The 0.5-10 keV spectrum is rather complex and consists of several components: (1) a hard X-ray power law heavily absorbed by a column density of about 3 10^23 cm^-2, (2) a narrow Fe Kalpha line at 6.4 keV, (3) soft continuum emission well above the extrapolation of the absorbed hard power law, (4) a narrow emission line at about 0.9 keV. The line energy, consistent with highly ionized Neon (NeIX), may indicate that the soft X-ray emission derives from a combination of resonant scattering and fluorescence in a photoionized gas. Some contribution to the soft X-ray spectrum from thermal emission, as a blend of Fe L lines, by a starburst component in the host galaxy cannot be ruled out with the present data.Comment: 8 pages, LateX, 5 figures (included).
